*What Is a Primary Consultant?
A primary consultant is the EMDR consultant who has provided the majority of your required consultation hours and who knows your clinical work, professional development, and readiness for the next level of EMDR practice.
For EMDR certification or Approved Consultant applications, EMDRIA requires that one consultant take responsibility for confirming that you have met consultation requirements and are practicing EMDR ethically, competently, and within scope.
Please read the EMDR Certification section above for more info on using Sam as your primary consultant
**Why Is a Recommendation Required from my Primary Consultant?
A recommendation from your primary consultant serves several important purposes:
-
Verification of consultation hours
The primary consultant confirms that you have completed the required number of consultation hours. -
Clinical competency endorsement
The letter attests that you demonstrate appropriate understanding and application of EMDR therapy, including case conceptualization, pacing, safety, and ethical practice. -
Professional readiness
EMDRIA requires an experienced consultant to assess whether you are ready to move forward with certification or Approved Consultant status. -
Accountability and integrity of the certification process
This ensures that certification is based on observed consultation work, not just self-report.
Because of this role, not every consultant can or should write a recommendation. Only the consultant who has served as your primary consultant and has sufficient knowledge of your work is eligible to provide this endorsement.
